We have two color systems – The Pantone Matching System (PMS), and The Pantone Fashion, Home + Interiors (FHI) System.

Why two ?

Different needs. Each system is designed to feature market-relevant colors. Fashion designers need more whites, blacks, and neutrals in their palette, while print and packaging designers need colors that will pop on shelf.
Pantone Shade Card - Graphics Shades includes the Pantone Graphics Color guides which has the extended gamut guide, the Pantone CMYK color guide and the spot color guides formulas are included in the Pantone Formula Guide. The PMS color guides are designed in such a manner so as to include the coated and uncoated editions for each color guide. The RGB colors are included in the Pantone Color Bridge which also has the coated & uncoated format. The Pantone Solid colors have two subcategories for the color guide and the Pantone Solid Chips Set.

Different materials. The appearance of color can change based on the material on which it is produced. In fact, some colors are not achievable at all on a certain material. Having two systems helps to ensure that the colors included are achievable and reproducible based on the materials used.

All of our color libraries are highly curate and backed by scientific achievability to meet market and manufacturing needs. Our systems are globally available, so when a designer in New York City specifies a certain Pantone Color Number, the manufacturer in Shanghai immediately knows exactly which color they want – and how to achieve it.
Even though they may not speak the same language, they both understand the global colors of Pantone.

Who created the pantone color matching system?

In 1963, a little known printing company called Pantone Inc. revolutionized the game with the world’s first color matching system. This system was developed by part-time employee, Lawrence Herbert. At the time, Herbert was coming into printing to make extra money to pay his way through medical school. However, he had a knack for the industry and a passion to improve the current system.

What are Pantone colors used for?

Almost all forms of advertising rely on the Pantone Matching System (PMS) for their colors. For example, colleges and universities use Pantone colors to print an exact color match for logos, mascots, and school names.

How does Pantone Choose the Paper for the guides?

Pantone Shade Cards print our colors on the most commonly used, globally available paper stocks. Our coated guide is #1 grade 100lb gloss text stock (148 g/m2) and the uncoated guide is premium grade 80lb text stock (118 g/m2).

What is the difference between Coated (C) and Uncoated (U)?

Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors marked with a C mean that the color is printed on coated paper for a glossy finish, as you would see in a magazine. This is desirable for sharp and complex designs, as the ink stays on top of the paper, preventing bleeding. Likewise, a U indicates uncoated paper, which has a more porous finish, common on letterhead. Uncoated paper is generally more absorbent of ink than coated, reducing sharpness.

What’s the difference between spot printing and process printing?

Understanding the difference between spot and process is incredibly important in setting color expectations from design intention to production and when transitioning from a computer screen to the printing press. Solid color printing, also known as spot or offset, uses ink mixed to a precise formulation, resulting in more precise colors and allowing for bold, vibrant colors.
